What to Wear for Couples Beach Photos

For couples beach photos, start with one color that appears in both outfits. If one person wears a print, try a solid on the other. Try oatmeal and clay on pale sand, ivory and muted coral on dark rocks, or cobalt and cream by a pool. If you’re wearing swimwear, bring one solid layer each so you can get a dressed look and a swim look without changing.

Beach photo outfits by location

What to wear and what to check in a test photo
SettingOutfit pairingWhat to check
Pale sandOatmeal shirt with sand and charcoal trunks + clay swimsuit. If light layers blend into the sand, show a darker piece or use water as the backdrop.
Dark rocksMuted coral swimsuit with an ivory shirt + solid slate trunks.Keep the ivory layer visible near a shoulder in a wide shot.

Soft neutrals for a sandy beach

  • Oatmeal
  • Clay
  • Charcoal

Wear this. One person wears sand-and-charcoal printed trunks with an oatmeal shirt. The other wears a clay or charcoal swimsuit and brings an ivory wrap. For fully dressed portraits, try an oatmeal button-down and clay dress or shorts. The darker piece gives the outfits some definition against pale sand.

Take one test photo facing the water and one facing the dunes. If the oatmeal shirt blends into the dunes, open it over a darker base or frame the shot with water behind you. In Dune Lines, you can see how warm sand and thin charcoal lines work together on separate pieces.

A muted color for a rocky coast

  • Ivory
  • Dusty coral
  • Slate

Wear this. Pair dusty coral swimwear with a light shirt and solid slate trunks. For a dressed look, try an ivory top and slate shorts alongside a muted coral dress. If the rocks are dark, keep the lightest layer visible near a face or shoulder so both people read clearly in a wide frame.

If one suit has several colors, pick the color you can see most clearly from across the room. A tiny accent in the print might work up close but disappear in a full-body shot. Coral Static is an example of a print where coral is visible in large blocks. Bring footwear you can walk in, and choose layers you can secure if the coast is windy.

One bright accent for poolside photos

  • Cobalt
  • Tangerine
  • Cream

Wear this. Put a cobalt-and-orange print on one person and solid cobalt on the other. A cream shirt or wrap gives the print some breathing room if the deck already has patterned umbrellas, tile or towels. For a fully dressed frame, try a cobalt top and cream shorts alongside a cream outfit with an orange accessory.

At a resort, start with a plain wall or a quiet corner of the pool deck. Add the umbrellas or loungers to the frame once you know how the colors read together. For a pool-to-restaurant layer, see our swimsuit cover-up outfit ideas.

Do a five-minute photo test

  1. Put both outfits in the same frame. Use your phone’s regular camera from far enough back to see head to toe. Look for a color that repeats and check which item catches your eye first.
  2. Try the layers both ways. Take a frame with shirts and wraps on, then another in swimwear. For one change of look, switch the layers and keep the base outfits.
  3. Move in the outfits. Walk, sit and lean together. Check whether hems ride up, a wrap opens, or a shirt needs a button to stay put in the breeze.
  4. Decide when you’ll get wet. Do dry portraits first if you want those, then finish with wading or swimming. Pack a dry layer for the walk back.

What to pack for the photo session

  • One solid shirt or wrap each for a second look.
  • Shoes you can walk in if you’ll cross rocks or a hot pool deck.
  • A towel and a bag for wet swimwear if you’ll get in the water.

If your photo session is part of a longer trip, start with the printable beach vacation packing checklist and add your photo outfits.

Questions about beach photo outfits

Do couples need to match for beach photos?

One repeated color is enough. Try blue in one person’s printed suit and on the other person’s shirt, or let both outfits share a neutral such as cream.

Can we both wear prints?

Yes. Try the same print on two different cuts, or pair a large print with a smaller pattern that shares a color. Check a wide phone photo before you pack to see whether you like how the patterns read together.

What should we wear for beach photos if we won’t swim?

Use the same color plan with pieces you can move in. A linen shirt with shorts, a loose dress, or a solid top with relaxed trousers all work. For trip outfit inspiration, browse our couples and vacation swimwear edit.
