Pack the first beach day in your carry-on

Put a swimsuit, a loose layer and one dry outfit together near the top of your carry-on. If a checked bag arrives late, you can still swim and change for lunch. If you’re sharing a checked bag, each traveler can keep their own first-day kit and essentials with them.

If you fly through U.S. security, check the TSA rules for carry-on liquids before packing sunscreen or other toiletries. If you’re checking luggage, put larger toiletries there or buy them at your destination.

Use the same pieces for more than one outfit

  1. Pick two swimsuits you’ll actually wear. Alternate between them and rinse and dry the suit you just wore. Bring a third for daily swims if your room has limited airflow or your plans include multiple swim stops.
  2. Choose a layer that works with both. One loose neutral shirt can go over a printed suit on the beach and button up over dry shorts for a casual lunch. For other pairings, see our cover-up outfits by swimsuit style.
  3. Set aside a dry outfit for dinner or travel. A spare top and bottom can cover both if the restaurant allows it. Check the reservation before you decide whether you need another pair of shoes.

For two people, the same rule works with a shared palette. A solid navy layer pairs with a navy print during the day and with plain shorts at night. Our couples vacation swimwear edit has examples of prints that coordinate across different cuts.

Decide what to share or leave at home

Check whether your accommodation supplies towels you can take to the beach, plus chairs or shade. If you’ll spend most of the trip at a resort, the day bag may be enough. For a public beach without rentals, work out the shade and seating plan before you leave. REI’s beach checklist is useful for a day when you’re bringing your own gear.

Share items you’ll use together, like a beach blanket or a larger bottle of sunscreen if your plans allow. Give each person access to their own room key or phone if you’ll split up. Leave a little room in the suitcase for the wet bag on the way home, and unpack it when you arrive.

Beach packing questions

Can I pack for a week at the beach in a carry-on?

Start with the seven-night column, wear your bulkiest shoes in transit, and reuse day bottoms with different tops. Plan one wash if you need to cut down on clothing, and confirm which towels or bulky beach items you can get there.

Do I need water shoes?

Check the beach or tour operator’s description. Water shoes are worth packing for a rocky or pebbly entry if they’re permitted. A sandy resort beach with an easy entry may only call for your regular beach shoes.

How do I print only the checklist?

Choose Print checklist in the printable section or use your browser’s print command. The print layout shows the quantity table and checklists on one sheet. Choose Save as PDF if you want a copy on your phone.
